Mediating Effects of Stress Coping Strategies on Relationships between Parental Conflicts Perceived by Children and Children¡¯s Social Anxiety

Abstract
he purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of stress coping strategies on the relationships between parental conflicts perceived by children and children¡¯s social anxiety. The subjects were 463 children(male 237, female 226) of 5th or 6th graders in Seoul. They were assessed by the Children¡¯s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale, the Children¡¯s Stress Coping Behaviors Scale and the Korean Social Anxiety Scale for Children and Adolescents. The results were as follows: First, parental conflicts perceived by children had a significant effect on children¡¯s social anxiety. Second, active, passive/avoidant and aggressive coping strategies had significant effects on children¡¯s social anxiety. Finally, passive/avoidant and aggressive coping strategies mediated the relationships between parental conflicts perceived by children and children¡¯s social anxiety. This study confirmed the mediating effects of stress coping strategies on the relationships between parental conflicts perceived by children and children¡¯s social anxiety.
